Summary

This Historical Bucharest Tour is all about the past and present of Romania's capital. The tour highlights the most important events and periods in the history of Bucharest through visits to the most representative historical attractions, from the medieval centuries to the glorious days La Belle Epoque and Little Paris.

The impact of the more than four decades of communism will be explored in detail, including with a visit to the monumental Palace of the Parliament.

During the tour, you'll find out new things not only about Bucharest's past, but also about the history of the region, a place at the crossroads of Europe where three major empires fought each other for centuries with crucial consequences for the countries from the South-East of the continent.

This is essentially a tour for travelers passionate about history, looking for a well-documented and specialized history tour.

The Historical Bucharest Tour is available from Monday to Sunday.

Tour suited also for seniors.

This tour can be modified according to your time and points of interest.

Itinerary

The itinerary can easily be adjusted depending on your hotel location. The main attractions of the tour are presented below, but more are included.

Unirii Square and the Civic Center

These landmarks are the creations of dictator Nicolae Ceausescu and testimonies of his ambition to completely change the capital in a way that fitted his idea of a 'new city' for the 'new man' he wanted to create.

Churches saved from communist demolition

You'll see one of the eight churches that were miraculously saved and moved even 300 meters away from their original place 30 years ago. They were hidden behind tall blocks, this being their only way of survival in front of the communist bulldozers. Some of them were moved at temperatures of -20 or -25 degrees Celsius.

The Palace of the Parliament

Locally known as the ‘House of the People’, the Palace of the Parliament is the most famous landmark of Romania’s communist period and the second largest administrative building in the world.

Part of Ceausescu’s vision of creating his own version of the capital, the construction is truly monumental with more than 1,000 rooms and hand-made decorations from the finest and most expensive materials, including 1 million cubic meters of marble and 3,5 tonnes of crystal.

The Old Town

Conserving some of the oldest monuments in the capital, but also lively streets packed with hundreds of bars and clubs, this otherwise small part of Bucharest is a must of any history tour.

You'll discover the unique architecture and history of its streets while observing key historical landmarks like the former Palace of the Post, the National Bank of Romania, the Macca-Villacrosse passage, centuries-old churches and inns.

The Old Court

The Old Court was for centuries the political center of Bucharest, the old city practically expanding around it. The most famous medieval prince who lived here is Vlad the Impaler, unjustly associated with the myth of Dracula.

The University Square

The University of Bucharest and Coltea Church are our main points of interest in this central square, one of the most beautiful in the city.

The 21st of December Square

Perhaps the most important place for the collective memory of Bucharest, this square was the center of the violent events of December 1989 and the early 90's. Groups of people occupied the square on December 21, 1989, to protest against the communist regime. They were arrested, beaten or shot in the evening of the same day, one of the main moments of the Revolution from 1989.

The protests continued in the same square just a few months after, this time against the newly installed government dominated by members of the former Communist Party.

Victoriei Avenue

Stretching on 2.7 kilometers from the United Nations Square to Victoria Square, this boulevard is maybe the best witness of the most glorious period of Bucharest. Its main attractions include landmarks like CEC Palace, the Military Club, the Atheneum, Cantacuzino Palace and, of course, the Revolution Square where Nicolae Ceausescu held his last speech in December 1989.
