This Communist Bucharest Tour explores the key landmarks of communism in Bucharest, a city that expanded almost double its size in this period, mainly due to Ceausescu’s vision of forced urbanization and destruction of the traditional village.
You get to visit the symbol of communism in Romania, the World Record Palace of the Parliament, a construction of enormous dimensions built with great sacrifices, the former residence of the Ceausescu family and the symbols of democracy: the Revolution Square and the 21st of December Square.
You'll also see the Civic Center built as part of the model city Nicolae Ceausescu was planning to create, but also two of the churches moved using an innovative technique even hundreds of meters away from their original location to save them from the political ordered demolition.
During this Communist Bucharest Tour, you'll find out how Bucharest was transformed by the communist regime, but also how the communists gained the power after the Second World War, the main instruments they used to keep it, the most important policies and decisions that affected Bucharest and Romania, while presenting the portraits of the most influential leaders of the period.
The Communist Bucharest Tour is available from Monday to Sunday.
Tour also suited for seniors.
This tour can be modified according to your time and points of interest.
The itinerary can easily be adjusted depending on your hotel location. The main attractions of the tour are presented below.
Optional visit to the Heroes' Mausoleum
Located in one of the oldest and most popular parks of Bucharest, the imposing 48 meters tall Mausoleum was built in the first communist years to commemorate the soldiers who died 'to free the country and install socialism', one of the first official lie of the regime. From the Mausoleum, you'll have a great view of the Palace of the Parliament, the major communist construction in Bucharest.
Locally known as the ‘House of the People’, the Palace of the Parliament is the most famous landmark of Romania’s communist period and the second largest administrative building in the world.
Part of Ceausescu’s vision of creating his own version of the capital, the construction is truly monumental with more than 1,000 rooms and hand-made decorations from the finest and most expensive materials, including 1 million cubic meters of marble and 3,5 tons of crystal.
You'll see two of the eight churches that were miraculously saved and moved even 300 meters away from their original place 30 years ago. They were hidden behind tall blocks, this being their only way of survival from the communist bulldozers. Some of them were moved at temperatures of -20 or -25 degrees Celsius.
The creations of dictator Nicolae Ceausescu and testimonies of his ambition to completely change the capital in a way that fitted his idea of a 'new city' for the 'new man'.
This permanent exhibition is the Bucharest branch of the Memorial from Sighet, one of the deadliest prisons where the interwar political elites were exterminated until 1955.
Perhaps the most important place for the collective memory of Bucharest, this square was the center of the violent events of December 1989 and the early 90's. Groups of people occupied the square on December 21, 1989 to protest against the communist regime.
They were arrested, beaten or shot in the evening of the same day, one of the main moments of the Revolution from 1989. The protests continued in the same square, just a few months after, this time against the newly installed government dominated by members of the former Communist Party.
The Revolution Square is a key place for the history of Bucharest and Romania. Ceausescu held his last speech here on December 22, 1989 on the balcony of the omnipotent Central Committee of the Romanian Communist Party, trying to calm the uprising masses.
Recently opened for the public, the former residence of the Ceausescu family offers the rare chance of an incursion into the communist past. The house is conserved almost entirely in its original form as in the days before December 1989 when the ruling family lived there. You'll see the bedrooms, the offices, the gardens and even the wardrobe of the dictatorial couple.
This attraction is only included in the tours that take place from Tuesday to Sunday.
Built during the first architectural cycle of the communist period in Romania, the former Scanteia edifice is one of the most impressive testimonies of the complete soviet influence in the first years of the regime.Back to top
