Summary

Our Jewish Bucharest Tour offers an ample incursion into the fascinating history of the Jewish community that less than a century ago represented 10% of the entire population of Bucharest. Designed as a walking tour in the old Jewish neighborhood, the itinerary includes the major synagogues and temples still standing after the communist demolitions, iconic landmarks that are part of the community’s cultural legacy, but also some of the most important monuments created by famous Jewish architects from Romania.

Our approach of the Jewish Bucharest Tour goes beyond simply visiting or observing landmarks, it’s a profound discussion about the history of the community, from the 16th century to the Second World War and the large migration waves (Aliyah) under the communist regime. Your tour guide will also share with you stories about the most important members of the Jewish community and their role in the history of Bucharest, from important bankers to doctors, artists, writers and architects.

The tour ends with a visit at the oldest Jewish cemetery in Bucharest where the Jewish elites were buried starting with the 19th century.

The Jewish Bucharest Tour is available every day except Saturday.

Tour suited also for seniors.

This tour can be modified according to your time and points of interest.

The tour starts at 9 am in the University Square from Monday to Thursday and at 8:30 am on Friday and Sunday. It’s important to keep to this schedule in order to visit the synagogues and the cemetery before closing time.

The Old Jewish Neighborhood

Few monuments still stand from the old Jewish neighborhood that once occupied the area Mosilor-Vacaresti-Dudesti. The major demolitions from the last decade of the communist regime have almost completely changed the identity of these streets, but the landmarks that still survive and the stories of your tour guide will recreate the atmosphere before the Second World War when the Jewish community was an active and important part of the capital’s commercial sector.

The tour starts with a walk in the Old City Center where most of the Jewish merchants had their shops. We’ll see the surviving old shops, but also major architectural landmarks that are related to the Jewish community, including the impressive edifice that belonged to one of the most important Jewish owned banks from the first decades of the 20th century.

The itinerary continues in the eastern part of the historical center, where we’ll walk on streets that were once in the heart of the old Jewish neighborhood.

Synagogues and Temples

Often discriminated, the Jewish community struggled throughout the centuries for the right to build synagogues. During the time of more tolerant princes from the 19th century, the construction of synagogues and temples started and continued until the Second World War.

While all the Jewish religious edifices were devastated in 1941, the largest destruction process started in the 80s when most of them were demolished by the order of the communist authorities. Their story and the struggles of the community during the war, but also the oppression of the communist regime are a central part of the tour.

We’ll visit the Choral Temple – an architectural masterpiece in Moorish style, the Polish Synagogue – the oldest in the city – that hosts the Holocaust Museum, and we’ll also stop to see the Holly Union Temple from 1852.

Jewish architects and their creations

Our Bucharest Jewish Tour continues with a walk through the old neighborhood, observing houses built by major Jewish architects like Marcel Iancu and Leonida Negrescu. It’s a great time to hear more stories about major figures of the community like Iuliu Barasch, Jacques Elias, Maximilian Popper or Liviu Librescu.

The Jewish Cemetery

We finish the tour with a visit at the oldest Jewish cemetery in Bucharest, further away from the city center. This is one of the most authentic attractions in the capital.

Drop off at the hotel after the tour of the cemetery.
