Vlad the Impaler versus Dracula Tour

Our Vlad the Impaler versus Dracula Tour will take you on an authentic discovery of the legendary medieval Prince Vlad the Impaler whose story inspired the mythical Dracula. Our proposal for you is an honest history tour that follows the medieval legacy of Vlad the Impaler with an added twist of history versus fiction, what’s true and what’s not in the legend of Dracula.

This is not the typical Dracula tour with invented vampires, but a real and authentic experience you'll remember for years to come.

Considered to be one of the greatest medieval heroes in the history of the country, praised for his battles against the expanding Ottoman Empire, Vlad the Impaler (Vlad Tepes in Romanian) is best known for drastically punishing traitors, often by impaling them, a practice not very unusual in his time.

He was, nonetheless, a fierce adversary for the expanding Ottoman Empire even with the cost of his life. His intransigence brought him many enemies, and some of the most powerful ones led a defaming campaign, creating a false reputation that will later inspire the Dracula myth.

The itinerary of the tour starts in Bucharest where we'll visit the ruins of the princely court Vlad the Impaler built in the 15th century and a monastery he founded.

Leaving Bucharest, we'll explore two of the key medieval fortifications used by the medieval prince, the princely court from Targoviste and the fortress from Poenari.

Continuing the journey to Transylvania, we'll discover his birthplace in Sighisoara, seeing more medieval fortresses and Bran Castle where so much of the Dracula myth is placed in vain.

Tour also suited for families and seniors.

This tour can be modified according to your time and points of interest.

Day 1: Arrival to Bucharest

Transfer to the hotel.

Accommodation: hotel in downtown Bucharest

Day 2: Vlad the Impaler in Bucharest

The tour starts in the capital of Romania where more than half a millennium ago, Vlad the Impaler built his residence known today as the Old Court. These ruins represent the oldest medieval attraction in Bucharest, located in the Old Town, a great opportunity to discover on foot this very popular area.

Afternoon visit to the Monastery of Comana, located in a nature park some 30 km from the capital. The monastery was founded by Vlad the Impaler back in 1461.

Highlights: the Old Court, the Old Town, the Monastery of Comana

Driving time: around 1-2 hours   Accommodation: hotel in downtown Bucharest

Day 3: The truth behind the myth

We leave Bucharest early morning and head to Targoviste to visit the Princely Court, the medieval capital of the historical province of Southern Romania, fortified by Vlad the Impaler during his reign like many of the princes who fought the Ottoman Empire.

We continue to Poenari Fortress, another major fortress of this medieval prince, strategically placed at an altitude of 850 meters. A dense beech forest shades the 1,480 steps that go up to the fortress, but this intense walk will be fully rewarded once you get to explore the narrow corridors of the fortress and see the panoramic surroundings.

If the weather allows it, we drive to Sibiu on one of the most panoramic mountain roads in Europe, the Transfagarasan. Built during the communist regime, with great human efforts and sacrifice, this 90 km road crosses the wild Southern Carpathians and offers us the chance to see amazing mountain landscapes.

Optional visit to one of the most beautiful medieval monasteries in Romania, Curtea de Arges.

Highlights: Targoviste and Poenari Fortresses

Driving time: around 6 hours   Accommodation: guest house in Sibiu

Day 4: Sighisoara, the birth place

Optional tour of Sibiu or morning for yourselves in the city, followed by the drive to Sighisoara.

The destination of the day is Sighisoara, the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Europe with many historical attractions to keep you entertained.

Walking tour in medieval Sighisoara, discovering the narrow streets from the Upper Town, visiting the Clock Tower, the Evangelical Church, the Monastery Church and much more. Like Brasov and Sibiu, Sighisoara too was founded by the Saxons who started coming to Transylvania in the 12th century.

What makes Sighisoara special is the fact that it still has almost intact large parts of the medieval towers and enclosure walls still standing. Much of the Dracula myth is related to this small city, although Vlad the Impaler spent here only the first four years of his life before his father became the Prince of Southern Romania.

Highlights: Sibiu, Sighisoara

Driving time: around 2 hours   Accommodation: guest house in Sighisoara

Day 5: The myth

We leave Sighisoara early morning and travel through scenic forest roads towards the medieval Bran Castle, falsely associated with the legend of Dracula. You’ll soon uncover the truth behind the myth, but not before visiting one of the largest fortresses in Transylvania, Rupea, located on our route towards Bran.

Afternoon for yourselves in Brasov.

Highlights: Rupea Fortress, Bran Castle

Driving time: around 3 hours   Accommodation: guest house in Brasov

Day 6: Back to Bucharest

We head back to Bucharest on the popular Prahova Valley.

Optional stop to visit Peles Castle, one of the most beautiful in Europe. Once the summer residence of Romania’s royal family, Peles is now the most visited museum in the country. While this castle is not at all related to the Dracula myth, it's more than worth a visit before you leave Romania.

On the way to Bucharest, we stop to visit the medieval Monastery of Snagov where Vlad the Impaler was supposedly buried after being assassinated. The actual burial place remains unknown until today.

Afternoon for yourselves in Bucharest.

Highlights: Snagov Monastery

Driving time: around 4 hours   Accommodation: hotel in downtown Bucharest

Day 7: Departure

Transfer to Otopeni International Airport.
