Summary

Explore a world of traditions, enchanting landscapes and slow paced countryside life with our private Rural Transylvania Tour. You’ll discover the typical architecture of villages founded even eight centuries ago by Saxon colonists, you’ll try delicious home cooked meals based on hundreds of years old recipes and visit the local artisans whose skills save unique traditions. You’ll experience a unique way of life, world apart from anything else.

Plus, you’ll stay in wonderfully restored guest houses in some of the most beautiful villages in Romania where you can rediscover the beauty of small things and the joys of a simpler life with less time for TV shows or non-stop Internet browsing.

The Rural Transylvania Tour also includes visits at landmarks from the UNESCO World Heritage Sites – the fortified churches from Viscri, Saschiz and Biertan plus the town of Sighisoara –, more historical monuments like the fortress of Rupea and the Gothic church from Malancrav, plus walking tours in Brasov, Sighisoara and Sibiu.

It’s an original itinerary for travelers looking to go off the beaten track, taking their time for a one of a kind experience.

Tour also suited for seniors.

This tour can be modified according to your time and points of interest.

Day 1: Transfer to Brasov

Transfer from Otopeni International Airport or from your location in Bucharest to Brasov, the destination of the first day. One of the seven town founded by the Saxon colonists starting with the 12th century, the city from the foothills of the Carpathians is today one of the most beautiful in Romania. It’s a great starting point for most tours in Transylvania, and visiting it is one of the best ways to discover the history of this world unique region.

Driving time: around 3 hours

Accommodation: guest house in Brasov

Day 2: Brasov and Rupea Fortress

Walking tour in the morning in the historical part of Brasov before we drive to the first village from the tour, Viscri.

Founded as a commercial city, defended throughout the centuries by an ample structure of fortifications, Brasov has a rich history and multicultural heritage. Often invaded by Ottoman armies, Brasov still conserves some of the most beautiful medieval landmarks in Romania, including the Council Square, the Black Church – the largest hall church East of Vienna –, centuries old towers, bastions and fortification walls.

After lunch, we head to Viscri, maybe the most famous of all the villages in Romania, a small community that conserves its authenticity and traditions so much that even Prince Charles visits almost every year.

Before reaching the village, we stop to visit the 14th century fortress from Rupea, one of the largest in Transylvania, an impressive testimony of the region’s troubled history from the medieval time.

Evening walk in Viscri to discover the village and its typical Saxon architecture.

Delicious traditional dinner served at the guest house.

Driving time: around 2 hours

Accommodation: guest house in Viscri

Day 3: One day in Viscri

A full day in Viscri that starts with a morning visit at the 12th century fortified church part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The monument, memorable for its white color fortified walls, dates from the 12th century. It was enlarged and strengthened several times to resist the enemy invasions, but served also as the main religious and cultural space of the Saxon community. The small Evangelical church we’ll see here is rarely used, but it’s one of the most charming in the region. You can always climb in its tower for a panoramic view over the village, but also visit the Ethnographic Museum.

For the rest of the day you can choose between a cycling trip to the nearby village of Crit and back or taking a horse cart ride and getting to know local artisans and the making of traditional products: the village blacksmith, the coal makers and the locals who produce thousands of bricks and tiles each year in an authentic oven.

Short evening drive to Saschiz, the next village destination from our Rural Transylvania Tour.

Delicious traditional dinner served at the guest house.

Driving time: less than 1 hour

Accommodation: guest house in Saschiz

Day 4: One day in Saschiz

A full day in Saschiz, another traditional Saxon village that completes the wonderful experience offered by Viscri. We start the day with a visit at the 15th century fortified church which you’ll soon see was built from the beginning to combine a military and religious role.

The monument is also included in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Romania. We continue with a power walk uphill to explore the ruins of the 14th century peasant fortification where villagers once hid from enemy attacks.

After lunch, we can combine or choose from various activities: visiting the local beekeeper, a horse cart ride to the shepherds, getting to know the making of local crafts including glass painted icons and pottery, or taking a long nature walk around the village.

Delicious traditional dinner served at the guest house.

Accommodation: guest house in Saschiz

Day 5: More UNESCO World Heritage Sites

We leave Saschiz in the morning and head to the next village from our tour. On the way to Malancrav, we stop for a walking tour in Sighisoara, one of the best conserved medieval towns in Europe. Its Upper Town part is completely included in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites and its visit is a must of any Transylvania tour.

Founded by the Saxon colonists, Sighisoara was a free, rich and powerful commercial city in the medieval centuries. To protect it, the various craftsmen, organized in trades, built and took care of defense towers, most of them still conserved even today. Besides the fortifications, we’ll also visit one of the most important churches in Transylvania – the Church on the Hill – and walk on centuries old streets to admire original houses, most of them over 300 years old.

On our way to Malancrav, we stop in Biertan to visit the largest of all the fortified churches from Transylvania part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

We spend the afternoon in Malancrav, a village that dates from 1305. This is today the village with the largest Saxon community in Transylvania. More isolated compared to the other villages, Malancrav has an impressive Evangelical church where you can admire the most ample and complete Gothic fresco in the region.

Delicious traditional dinner served at the guest house.

Driving time: around 2 hours

Accommodation: guest house in Malancrav

Day 6: Malancrav and Alma Vii

Morning walk in the village and visits to the local women artisans who specialize in weaving and textiles. We take a short drive afterwards to Alma Vii, another splendid Saxon founded village that dates from 1289. We visit the fortified church and take lots of photos of the beautiful colorful houses.

After lunch, we head to the destination for the day, the city of Sibiu, one of the highlights of the citadels founded by the Saxon colonists.

Driving time: around 3 hours

Accommodation: guest house in Sibiu

Day 7: Sibiu and back to Bucharest

Morning walking tour in Sibiu, for many the most beautiful city in Romania. Dating from 1190, Sibiu was for a long time the political center of the Saxon community from Transylvania. Founded under the German name ‘Villa Hermani’, Sibiu developed gradually around the Evangelical Church from Huet Square. We’ll visit this imposing Gothic style church, one of the largest in Transylvania, alongside the Small Square, the Large Square and their iconic monuments.

After lunch, we head back to Bucharest. Depending on the time, weather and road conditions, we choose between the Olt Valley or the high-altitude mountain road Transfagarasan.

Optional visit at the 14th century Cozia Monastery, one of the oldest in Southern Romania, or at the state of the art Cozia Monastery (depending on the chosen road option).

Driving time: around 5-6 hours

Accommodation: hotel in downtown Bucharest
