This ancient and medieval tour in Romania is all about history, starting from ancient times when the Roman Empire conquered Dacia, continuing to the medieval centuries when the Romanian countries occupied the front seats of the battles against the Ottoman Empire. If you're passionate about wars, battles and major events in the history of the continent, then this tour might just be what you're looking for.

The itinerary follows the must-see ancient and medieval attractions of Romania, including state of the art churches, Roman ruins, the impressive Alba Iulia Citadel and historical Sibiu, the UNESCO World Heritage Sites from Orastie plus visits to the famous Corvin Castle and the oldest church in Romania.

You'll get to walk around the historical centers of cities like Brasov and Sibiu founded by the Saxon colonists more than 800 years ago or hike to discover the ruins of an ancient defensive system the Dacian tribes built before being conquered by the Roman Empire.

We even added a few optional trips for you to have the best time during your time in Romania.

Tour also suited for seniors.

This tour can be modified according to your time and points of interest.

Day 1: Arrival

Arrival in Bucharest and transfer to the hotel.

Accommodation: hotel in central Bucharest

Day 2: Medieval monasteries

We leave Bucharest early morning and head towards Transylvania. Along the way, we stop to visit the monasteries from Curtea de Arges and Cozia.

Built 500 years ago, the monastery Curtea de Arges is also the burial place of Romania’s most loved kings and queens, a reference space for the Orthodox Church in Romania. This church has a very specific architectural style that influenced for centuries many other religious monuments from the southern part of the country.

Cozia Monastery is even older as it dates from the 14th century. The church of the monastery still conserves part of its original Byzantine style paintings.

Driving time: around 6 hours   Accommodation: guest house in Alba Iulia

Day 3: Alba Iulia Citadel

Walking tour in one of the largest citadels in Europe. Wonderfully restored a few years ago, Alba Iulia Citadel is a unique attraction in Romania. It's a wonderful travel destination where you can observe history evolving across millenniums, starting with its ancient time as a Roman castrum to its medieval days, its time under the Habsburg Empire and its glorious moment as Romania’s union capital in 1918.

One of the most important historical monuments in Romania, the citadel has numerous attractions: the ruins of ancient sites, impressive Baroque gates, a major 12th century Catholic Cathedral, the Batthyaneum Library that has some of the rarest books in Europe, the Princely Palace, the Orthodox Cathedral and the Museum of Unification. It’s no doubt one of the top places to visit in Transylvania.

Accommodation: guest house in Alba Iulia

Day 4: Ancient sites and medieval glory

This day is all about ancient and medieval times. The itinerary includes the ruins of the ancient Roman capital from Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa, Corvin Castle, the largest Gothic castle in the country and the best-conserved Gothic monument in South-East Europe, and Densus Church, the oldest church in Romania.

At Corvin Castle, you'll hear the story of Prince Ioan of Hunedoara, who made from this monument a symbol of his own political success. Born into a Romanian family from the land of Hateg, he reached the highest military and administrative ranks in the Hungarian Kingdom in a time when this was a rare privilege. He was a great military leader of his time, defeating the Ottoman Empire several times in its expansion towards  Central Europe.

At Densus, you'll visit a unique church that was built with columns and rock blocks from the ancient Roman capital whose ruins you'll also see on this day.

Highlights: Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa, Corvin Castle, Densus Church

Accommodation: guest house in Alba Iulia

Day 5: Sibiu

All day is reserved for Sibiu and its wonderful surroundings. The European Capital of Culture in 2007, also included by Forbes Magazine in its top of Europe’s most idyllic places to live, Sibiu is one of the seven medieval citadels founded by the Saxons, and one the most attractive tourist destinations in Romania.

Dating from the 12th century, Sibiu was from the very beginning a powerful commercial city, fortified rapidly for its own protection. The squares from the Upper Part appeared one by one, following the extension of the fortification system. The tour of the city includes these major squares – the Large Square, the Small Square, Huet Square –, the impressive Evangelical Church, the Council Tower, the bastions and towers from Cetatii Street and much more.

Optional visit to the fortified church from Cisnadioara in the afternoon.

Highlights: Sibiu

Accommodation: guest house in Sibiu

Day 6: Cistercian ruins and Brasov

We drive early morning from Sibiu to Brasov, stopping at Carta to explore the ruins of the most Eastern Cistercian monastery of the continent that centuries ago inspired the construction of many fortified churches around Brasov and Sibiu.

Lunch in Rasnov where you'll also visit one of the most important medieval monuments in Transylvania, Rasnov Fortress. Its construction belongs to the time of the Saxon settlement, and the fortress was a functional medieval burg during the long sieges lead by the Ottoman armies.

Walking tour of Brasov in the afternoon. A city located at the foothills of the Southern Carpathians, with an architecture strongly related to its Saxon heritage, Brasov played throughout history a crucial role in defending the route that linked historical Transylvania and Southern Romania. The Black Church – the largest hall church East of Vienna –, the ruins of the medieval fortifications and the historical center are the main attractions of the city tour.

You can also discover these two locations with our one day tour Brasov and Rasnov Fortress.

Highlights: Carta Monastery, Rasnov Fortress, Brasov

Accommodation: guest house in Brasov

Day 7: UNESCO World Heritage Site

A special day, with an optional morning visit to the Bear Sanctuary from Zarnesti, one of the largest in Europe, a safe haven for brown bears rescued from captivity. Drive afterward to Prejmer to visit the largest peasant fortified church in this part of Europe, also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It's a light day, you'll have plenty of time to walk on the streets of Brasov or take an optional trip to Bran Castle, a 14th-century medieval fortress that found international fame after being unjustly associated with the myth of Dracula.

Bran Castle is also included in our Medieval Fortresses Tour.

Highlights: Prejmer Fortified Church

Accommodation: guest house in Brasov

Day 8: Back to the 20th century

We head back to Bucharest, but make a day out of it visiting two of the most beautiful castles in Romania: Peles and Cantacuzino Castles.

Peles Castle, the summer residence of the Romanian royal family, was built by King Carol the 1st starting with 1873. The construction and decorating works of the Neo-German Renaissance style castle took place continuously until his death in 1914. This fairy tale residence was from the very beginning one of the most impressive castles in Europe.

You'll also visit Cantacuzino Castle, designed in a Neo-Romanian style by one of the most famous architects of the early 20th century, Grigore Cerchez. The castle has a surface of 3,148 square meters and splendid romantic interiors.
